Welcome to the neighborhood

Before You Unpack

Grimmstone exists somewhere between midnight and 5:25 a.m. That does not mean the city stands still. People go to work, miss deliveries, argue about rent, rehearse for performances, and complain about the weather. The rain, at least, remains admirably consistent.

This guide concerns the things a visitor can reasonably learn. It is not a substitute for a local guide, a sensible pair of shoes, or the approved rules of the Grimmstone tabletop game.

Choose Your Concern

Chapter 01 · Mind the route

Getting Around

Walking is a fine way to learn a neighborhood. Roads and vehicles carry people and goods between districts; rail yards and freight routes are particularly important in Ironworks. Beyond the city streets, travel toward and through the Dark Forest calls for preparation and respect for the terrain.

Do not assume every railway line is a passenger service or that every road has a published fare. Specific routes, services, and costs belong to the approved setting references or an individual Game Master's ruling.

Local wisdom: When asking for directions, describe where you are going. “Away from here” is less helpful than you might hope.

Chapter 02 · Keep your receipts

Money, Markets & The Trust

Grimmstone has an economy, which means that even a supernatural city cannot escape bills. People buy groceries, rent rooms, pay wages, repair clothing, and save for emergencies. The Trust is an established banking institution; exchange arrangements and prices follow the setting's approved references.

Old Market is a natural place to browse independent traders. At Moonlight Pawn & Curio , Mori handles ordinary valuables and stranger possessions alike. At Hallow Miracles , Evelyn Hallow's family manages the practical business of magical commerce.

Local wisdom: If a shopkeeper asks whether an heirloom belongs to you, answer the question they actually asked.

Chapter 03 · Everyone lives somewhere

Meeting the Neighbors

Humans live alongside vampires, werekin, goblins, ghosts, revenants, succubi, and other supernatural ancestries. None of these identities tells you everything about a person's job, wealth, character, or intentions. Your neighbor might be a nurse, mechanic, baker, teacher, or someone who simply wishes you would stop blocking the stairs.

Respect people's homes, livelihoods, and boundaries. Some residents have ancestry-specific needs, including feeding requirements, governed by established game rules—not by rumors or this pamphlet.

Local wisdom: Being unusual is not a personality flaw. Neither is wanting the noise kept down.

Chapter 04 · Applaud appropriately

Nightlife & Etiquette

Music, theater, clubs, and neighborhood gatherings are part of the city's ordinary social life. The Velvet Quarter is especially known for entertainment, including The Crimson Tear , where Madam Lysandra Noctear performs and welcomes patrons.

Performers are professionals. Respect the staff, the venue's rules, consent, and the people sharing your evening. A show does not need a murder, a curse, or a dramatic interruption to be worth attending.

Local wisdom: If the singer makes eye contact, it is not necessarily a prophecy. Sometimes the singer is simply very good.

Chapter 05 · Sit down and eat

Food, Drink & Hospitality

There are cafés, diners, taverns, stalls, and family kitchens across Grimmstone. A favorite meal or a familiar table can tell you more about a neighborhood than a hundred whispered legends.

Restaurants have suppliers and staff. Vendors have regulars. Hosts have obligations. Be courteous, pay for what you order, and remember that hospitality is often a relationship, not just a transaction.

Local wisdom: When the waiter says the special is unforgettable, ask whether that is a recommendation or a warning.

Chapter 06 · Not every problem is paranormal

Trouble & Assistance

Grimmstone has law enforcement, medical workers, emergency responders, community defenders, and private security arrangements. A stolen bag may need an investigator; a broken arm needs treatment. Not every incident conceals a cosmic conspiracy.

Authority and responsibility vary by neighborhood and circumstance. No single faction controls the whole city. In an emergency, seek appropriate local help rather than relying on a stranger's confident explanation of how the city works.

Local wisdom: “I thought it was haunted” is not generally accepted as an explanation for breaking a window.

Chapter 07 · A final word

There Are People Here

Behind every intriguing storefront is someone balancing the books. Behind every strange alley is a street where somebody grew up. Grimmstone has secrets, but its residents have lives that continue whether or not you are paying attention.

Look closely. Ask good questions. Leave room for the ordinary. And if you become lost, remember that being lost is not always the same as being unwelcome.

Official conclusion: Welcome to Grimmstone. Please enjoy your stay. We cannot guarantee its duration.
